About me, and this project
I'm Kat Aaron, a longtime journalist getting a masters in Emergency Management. I study what might come, and how we can meet those challenges. With this newsletter, I want to share information about preparedness, and help you feel less alone.
Preparing for disaster often means guns and bunkers. It often means planning to protect only ourselves and our nuclear family. And for a lot of us, that's not appealing or relevant.
I think about survival as a collective project. I think about preparedness in community. I think about how we can work now to face the future, and how to do that with joy and creativity and collaboration.
We need to be more ready than we are. That doesn't have to be scary or overwhelming. It can be affirming, strengthening, grounding.
Sign up for my more-or-less bi-weekly newsletter for practical advice, encouragement, context and resources. Thanks for reading.
PS. Why is this not a Substack?
I see the appeal of Substack - I think the discoverability is probably better. But Ghost is open source, and the creator owns the audience data. So subscribers won't get promotions for other newsletters, or anything I don't send. Which seems worth the tradeoffs, especially since I was starting from scratch. Ghost has a (probably somewhat self-serving) chart comparing the two services here.
